Let’s talk about reading slumps!
Reading slumps happen to the best of us and I’m here to say that I haven’t been in the mood to read. That’s not to say that what I was reading wasn’t any good, I am not here to talk about DNFing books. I’m here to talk about reading slumps. Who’s with me?
If you’re in a reading slump or have been in a reading slump than you’ve probably felt guilty, because you probably have the time but you’re just not in the mood. I get it. We all get it. Having the time to sit down and read does not mean you have the mental energy to do it. And that’s an important distinction to make, because it means that having the time and energy to read is a luxury we all can’t afford. Sometimes other activities are just what we need to unwind and decompress without putting too much effort into it.
I know. I am home by nine most days of the week and in bed by ten. By that time the only things I want to do is watch the Office or play Animal Crossing. And it’s not like I don’t have time to read, I do. I have five hours before I have to be at work. In that time I’m creating. If I wasn’t so busy and so strapped for time I’d read. If I wasn’t so stressed, so broke and so exhausted, I’d read.
Getting out of a reading slump has always been about making an effort. Whether you’re choosing to read something you know you’ll love or something easy, it requires effort. It’s okay to acknowledge when you can’t or don’t want to make an effort. The stress of getting out of a reading slump or feeling like you need to be reading more is what keeps you in them. Reading is meant to be fun - we read because like to.
That’s our dilemma. We miss reading when we’re in reading slumps. I miss reading and I’d love to kick this in the bud before the end of October, but if I’m being completely honest with myself, I don’t think I’m ready yet. If you’re ready, all power to you!
